Instathingy

Having only very recently acquired an Iphone,
I have eventually joined Instagram!
With so many of my blog friends on there, it is so good to be
joining in and seeing all the creativity through lots of pics.
Here are a few of my first pics on there as :: alittlevintage1

My Creative Space

I'm back with the spray painting again!

This shelving unit (I can't remember if we got it in NZ or UK), was a dark brown wood before.
I did a few coats on the outside and just one coat on the backing board.
I like how you can still see the knots and grain through the paint.
Being a lighter colour, it has really opened up the space in our living area now.

I also repainted some of our old dining room chairs.
(I originally painted them white about 12 years ago
when I was pregnant with the eldest).
I've used an outdoor paint so that some of
these chairs can go with the garden table.

And these are two of the second hand chairs we got a few months ago - with new coats on!
I love this blue, it went on really well. The yellow looks good too, but it was a nightmare
to spray on compared to the other colours I've been using. It dripped really easily,
so there are patches I need to sand over and do again.
(see the other chairs I've already done here)

Here's a bit more yellow for you -
some pineapple jellys setting for the little one (and her big sis)
who is not well at the mo.

Kirsty asked us last week in My Creative Space  what our best tips were for staying creative.

I think that mixing things up a bit and stepping out of your comfort zone is a good thing.
Have a go at something a little different, even if it is still within your genre.
Push past the frustration barrier and keep going.

Also - always have something at hand,  to jot down new ideas
or inspirations where ever you are. Either a notebook or sometimes
I use Evernote on my phone, which is great for lots of lists.
(including the shopping list)

Thanks to Leonie for my gorgeous new notebook -
I love the tape measure page finder!!xx

Op Shop Find - Harlequin on a Horse

I was at my daughters netball tournament held at another school, a few weeks ago.
Between games I popped to the local op shops that I had never been to before.
There was nothing of interest until I got to the third one,
and found this framed Picasso print.
Here is some info from Wikepedia about the time he painted it ::

The Rose Period signifies the time when the style of Pablo Picasso's painting used cheerful orange and pink colours in contrast to the cool, somber tones of the previous Blue Period. The Rose Period lasted from 1904 to 1906. Picasso was happy in his relationship with Fernande Olivier whom he had met in 1904 and this has been suggested as one of the possible reasons he changed his style of painting. Harlequins, circus performers and clowns appear frequently in the Rose Period and will populate Picasso's paintings at various stages through the rest of his long career. The harlequin, a comedic character usually depicted in checkered patterned clothing, became a personal symbol for Picasso.

I've been trying to get back into face painting mode again.

Its been a while. And I always feel nervous starting up again.

We'll see how they turn out.
(the flat face always looks alot different from the stuffed face!)

MCS

I've just finished these faces in My Creative Space.
The boy on the left is painted on tea dyed calico,
the girl on the right is painted on a linen mix freckley fabric,
and the one in the front is on a darker brown cotton.
These are going to be added to my doll sale that is on at the moment.
(when they're all sewn up of course!)

I'm hoping to use some of this vintage curtain,
thats drying on the line for one of the dolls.

And I've finished this cardy for the little one.
She loves purple and orange - she chose the trim!
Made from some op shopped jumpers, the purple one is part mohair - so soft!
Its held together with a vintage press stud -
we are yet to decide if theres going to be a button added for effect.
(she sooooo loves it - yay!)

More creative spaces over here. xx

Doily Painting

With encouragement from the lovely lady who made this doily (brooch),
I had a go at doily painting last night!  It was a very bright white, so I added a bit of blue and green - my fav colours.

I couldn't stop then though, and so had a go at painting some doilies from the op shop. Don't worry - they're not vintage ones!

I wasn't that impressed with how the yellow and red turned out.

But the blue/green combination I loved!

The detail of the doily is bought out so much with the paint.

How do you fancy this for a halo?

I covered the doilies with a wash of water and then used watered down fabric paint. Gradually adding more paint for a deeper colour. Following the pattern of the doilies, its almost like paint by numbers.
If you want to set the fabric paint, bake them in the oven for 5 minutes at a low temp of 150c. (much easier than ironing for 5 minutes!)

So have a go, if you have some that you think could look a little different
 - put your own spin on them.
(probably best to make sure they're not family heirlooms first tho!)

PS. My brooch swap partner has received her brooch! It went to the lovely CraftyRie!xx
